What is the difference between SCOBY and Kombucha?

SCOBY = Single Colony of Yeast and Bacteria.

Kombucha is sugared tea fermented with SCOBY.

My SCOBY had stopped brewing. Why?

There could be a number of reasons to this. One of the most common is that your culture has aged and is coming to the end of its lifespan.

Most of the commercial probiotic drinks avaiable has additives and preservaties; kombucha is home made and does not need additives for storage.

Is it an alcoholic drink?

Kombucha is definitely not an alcoholic drink. The percentage of alcohol stands at only 0.005% which is highly negligible.

Should I wash the mother Culture? It stinks!

You dont have to. The "stink" is actually the smell of fermentation. Washing actually might have an adverse effect as it will remove the yeast which is part of the SCOBY from the mother culture.

Is kombucha the same with kefir?

Yes and no. Yes in a sense that both are fermentation product. No in  a sense that both uses different types of bacteria to ferment.

Is it a cure for diabetes?

It is a common myth that Kombucha can help with diabetes. As it stands there is no scientific evidence that Kombucha can assist with those who has diabetes. Better err at the side of caution on this one.

Top 3 uses of an "aged" Mother SCOBY

1.  Pet Food

Blend the "aged mother" and mix it with your pet food . Your pet will instantly get the benefits from Kombucha as well.

2.  Compost

Same as no 1, blend or just place the aged mother culture with your compost pile to return the nutrients back to the soil and to your garden.

Direct consumption

Yes the aged mother culture is edible!. All you need to do is to clean it, cut it into small block pieces and at it to any beverage (kombucha included of course). The texture is like nata de coco and it will provide your body with celulose which is excellent for colon health.
